Tiong Bahru Plaza, a sprawling shopping centre located at the fringes of the estate, is the neighbourhood’s go-to spot for a brief respite from the sweltering heat—and a host of shopping, dining and entertainment options. Whether you’re a seasoned local or an uninitiated visitor, Tiong Bahru Plaza is filled with surprises at every twist and turn, and promises something for everyone.
Boasting over 150 shops, restaurants and outlets, one thing is certain: you’ll never be bored while wandering the towering stories of this huge mall. If you’re on the hunt for a place to spend a whole afternoon (or maybe more), here’s your guide to the ins and outs of this luxurious labyrinth.
Background Of Tiong Bahru Plaza
Tiong Bahru Plaza was originally opened in 1994 as the first shopping centre in the greater Tiong Bahru-Bukit Merah area. Back then, it boasted just over 100 shops and basic amenities including a department store, supermarket, food court and cinema.
Still, it quickly became a neighbourhood landmark, and established itself as a favourite of residents of all ages. The mall’s popularity endured long enough for it to undergo renovation in 2005, and its interior space was greatly expanded with the conversion of the Basement 1 carpark. A direct passageway was also built between the mall and the nearby Tiong Bahru MRT station, making it all the more convenient for shoppers to pay a visit.
However, Tiong Bahru Plaza as we know it today is the result of a series of major renovation works carried out in 2015, to the tune of no less than $90 million. Extensive construction and remodelling began in August 2015, and the mall was reopened 7 months later in March 2016. Among its many new features were 25,000 square feet of increased retail space, new communal spaces and an 800m2 playground. It also became connected to the Central Plaza office tower nearby.
Over the years, these changes have helped Tiong Bahru remain an attractive destination for both locals and visitors alike, and draw in a younger crowd to keep up with the times. Today, it serves as the hub of Tiong Bahru’s retail and entertainment scene, helping to connect this historic estate to the rest of Singapore.
Everybody’s favourite pastime is well-served here at Tiong Bahru Plaza, which is home to more than 50 F&B establishments ranging from sprawling restaurants to modest bakeries. Here, you’ll have your pick of everything from old favourites to popular chains and specialty offerings. Needless to say, this is one place where you’ll truly be able to eat to your heart’s content.
A highlight of any visit to Tiong Bahru Plaza is undoubtedly the food street on Level 2, which houses an array of casual dining restaurants offering a range of mouth-watering cuisines. Chances are that whatever you’re in the mood for can be found somewhere in this extensive network of eateries. The soft, warm lighting makes for the perfect ambience, ensuring that your meal will be a solidly pleasurable one.
For a quick, affordable bite, your best bet is the Kopitiam food court on the 3rd floor. Boasting a wide array of traditional hawker fare, including old favourites like laksa and chicken rice, the tantalising smell of food alone is enough to draw you in. Head here for a fresh, original take on the familiar dishes you love!
Though it lacks a dedicated fashion wing, you’ll still find yourself spoilt for choice with just one look at the rows of clothing stores that populate Tiong Bahru Plaza. Professional working women will find their needs well-served with popular homegrown brands like iORA and Echo of Nature, whose catalogue is specially tailored to help you beat the heat while looking effortlessly stylish. Meanwhile, international chains like Cotton On and Uniqlo cater to customers of all shapes, sizes and colours with their trendy, affordable wares.
Next, don’t forget to swing by Innisfree and The Face Shop for your cosmetics fix! Both Korean brands have made a splash in recent years, and no shopping spree is complete without a quick visit to browse their amply stocked shelves.
Among the hustle and bustle of this often-crowded mall, you can still find a few pockets of peace and quiet. Slip inside one of Tiong Bahru Plaza’s many health, beauty and wellness outlets for some well-deserved rest and relaxation, and indulge in an afternoon of pampering. After all, it’s not every day that you find yourself hanging out in one of Tiong Bahru’s hottest spots.
Unwind from your hectic workweek at the Heart Springs Spa on the 4th floor, where you can enjoy a range of services including massages, facials and cosmetic procedures. Or you could have a couple of your features professionally touched up at the Allure Beauty Saloon, before heading down to award-winning chain Nail Palace for a classic mani-pedi. The possibilities are endless with Tiong Bahru Plaza’s extensive array of lifestyle options!
Tiong Bahru Plaza has no shortage of entertainment options, chiefly the recently-renovated Golden Village cinema located on the 4th floor. Following its reopening in 2016, the cinema features 800 seats across 5 screens and offers an intimate viewing experience with state-of-the-art technology. Enjoy both blockbusters and independent films (including the occasional GV Exclusive) at Singapore’s largest cinema chain.
Aching for a more active way to spend your time? You’re not alone. Join dozens of fellow gamers at the Virtualand arcade, located right next to the cinema. With an array of video games, merchandisers and machines at your disposal, you’ll find that time really does fly when you’re having fun.
Tiong Bahru Plaza is extremely accessible, located right outside Tiong Bahru MRT station on the East West Line. You can take either the escalator or the lift to the ground floor and begin your excursion. Alternatively, if you’re driving, the entrance to the carpark is located along Bukit Ho Swee Crescent.
The mall is open from 10.00am–10.00pm daily.
At the end of the day, Tiong Bahru Plaza’s seemingly endless list of stores places it squarely among the estate’s most popular stops, and for good reason. Even walking the corridors of its four hulking floors is enough to get you excited about spending time in this trendy new mall, much less the cornucopia of restaurants, shops and entertainment outlets that awaits you. Enjoy all this and more—only at Tiong Bahru Plaza.
