Tiong Bahru Plaza, a sprawling shopping centre located at the fringes of the estate, is the neighbourhood’s go-to spot for a brief respite from the sweltering heat—and a host of shopping, dining and entertainment options. Whether you’re a seasoned local or an uninitiated visitor, Tiong Bahru Plaza is filled with surprises at every twist and turn, and promises something for everyone.

Boasting over 150 shops, restaurants and outlets, one thing is certain: you’ll never be bored while wandering the towering stories of this huge mall. If you’re on the hunt for a place to spend a whole afternoon (or maybe more), here’s your guide to the ins and outs of this luxurious labyrinth.

Background Of Tiong Bahru Plaza

Tiong Bahru Plaza was originally opened in 1994 as the first shopping centre in the greater Tiong Bahru-Bukit Merah area. Back then, it boasted just over 100 shops and basic amenities including a department store, supermarket, food court and cinema.

Still, it quickly became a neighbourhood landmark, and established itself as a favourite of residents of all ages. The mall’s popularity endured long enough for it to undergo renovation in 2005, and its interior space was greatly expanded with the conversion of the Basement 1 carpark. A direct passageway was also built between the mall and the nearby Tiong Bahru MRT station, making it all the more convenient for shoppers to pay a visit.

However, Tiong Bahru Plaza as we know it today is the result of a series of major renovation works carried out in 2015, to the tune of no less than $90 million. Extensive construction and remodelling began in August 2015, and the mall was reopened 7 months later in March 2016. Among its many new features were 25,000 square feet of increased retail space, new communal spaces and an 800m2 playground. It also became connected to the Central Plaza office tower nearby.

Over the years, these changes have helped Tiong Bahru remain an attractive destination for both locals and visitors alike, and draw in a younger crowd to keep up with the times. Today, it serves as the hub of Tiong Bahru’s retail and entertainment scene, helping to connect this historic estate to the rest of Singapore.

Food
